Artist Statement

I paint people, places, and moments that seem to hold a story just beyond what we can see.

I'm drawn to the connections we make, the memories we carry, and the seemingly ordinary things that leave a lasting impression.

Working in oil, charcoal, and Fusainaille, I use light, expression, and carefully chosen details to suggest a story without revealing all of it.

I want viewers to find something that resonates with their own lives, and to build a story of their own from the clues I've left behind.

Meet the Artist

Darren Cranford

Canadian Painter

I have wanted to create worlds for as long as I can remember. That instinct carried me from art school in Newfoundland to animation in Toronto, then into game design, directing, visual effects, and eventually building studios of my own. For more than thirty years, I made a career telling stories through images.

As the responsibilities of directing and running companies grew, personal painting was gradually pushed aside. The artist never disappeared; I simply stopped giving him any time.

More than twenty years later, Casey saw some of my earlier paintings and asked the question I had avoided asking myself: why had I stopped? Her belief in the work—and in me—helped me pick up the brushes again. Returning to painting has not felt like beginning something new. It has felt like returning to the part of myself that was there from the beginning.

Every painting begins with a story, but I don’t want the finished work to simply retell it. Through light, composition, and the act of painting, it must become a story unto itself—one that leaves room for the viewer to enter.
